Project Facts

Project Number A0009(897)
Key Number 09897

The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) will provide final design and construct a new bridge to replace the existing Topaz Bridge. This project is part of a larger effort to improve U.S. 30 between McCammon and Soda Springs.

Description

The Topaz Bridge project will complete final design of a U.S. 30 bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad and the Portneuf Marsh Valley Canal, and associated road work. It also will complete final design of approximately seven acres of wetland mitigation at the Price Road mitigation site.

The final design is expected to be completed in the winter 2008/2009. The public will be invited to an open house to view the latest project information and construction schedule.

Background

Approximately 31 miles of major widening and realignment from McCammon to Fish Creek (west of Soda Springs) was carried through preliminary design, public hearing and environmental approval in 2003, in three development segments.

Segment Two, approximately 3.5 miles, from Topaz Bridge to just west of Lava Hot Springs was developed through final design and is currently under construction.

Final design is required for Segments One and Three. The McCammon to Topaz project covers part of Segment One between Crystal Springs Road and Old Oregon Trail Road. Additional funding will be necessary to design and construct the remaining improvements in Segment One between McCammon and Crystal Springs Road.

Schedule and Funding

The design of the U.S. 30 Topaz Bridge project is funded with GARVEE bonds through the GARVEE Transportation Program. Right-of-way acquisitions are currently under way using ITD funds. Additional funding will be necessary to construct the project, which is currently scheduled for Summer 2009.
