Project Facts

Project Numbers: A009(819) and A009(820)
Key Numbers: 09819 and 09820

The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) will design improvements to widen 2.3 miles of eastbound and westbound Interstate 84 for a future third and fourth lane in each direction between Cole Road and Vista Avenue. The improvements will allow the roadway to safely accommodate traffic and prolong the life of the road surface.

Description

The Cole Road to Vista Avenue project improvements begin west of the Orchard Street Interchange and continue to the Vista Avenue Interchange. The final design plans will include:

  • Rehabilitation of the existing road surface, which is beginning to fail.

  • Two additional eastbound and westbound lanes on I-84 that will begin west of the Orchard Street Interchange and continue to the Vista Avenue Interchange.

    Background

This project is a result of an Environmental Assessment and a planning study for I-84 from just west of the Orchard Interchange to the Isaacs Canyon Interchange (Eisenman Road). The interstate, built in the late 1960s, was not designed to handle the current traffic volumes. This corridor is experiencing periods of congestion, which will reach critical levels within the next decade.

The study recommends improvements for the ultimate build out of this corridor, including replacing the existing pavement, adding lanes to the interstate from Cole Road to Gowen Road, and reconstructing the Orchard, Vista, Broadway, and Gowen interchanges to meet the future traffic capacity requirements.

ITD received environmental approval for this project from the Federal Highway Administration in November 2007. For more information about the Environmental Assessment, click here.

    Schedule and Funding

Final design for the additional lanes began in July 2007.

Construction of the ultimate build out for the nine-mile corridor far exceeds the available funding from the GARVEE Transportation Program, which uses GARVEE bonds. The remaining improvements needed for the ultimate build out of the corridor will be completed as more funds become available.
