Construction Updates

   

Traffic Impacts: August 2008

 

Nighttime lane closures on I-84 between the Black Cat Overpass and the Meridian Interchange will continue through August.  

 

The lane closures will allow crews to grade the median and begin paving. The new pavement will allow all I-84 traffic between the Locust Grove and Black Cat overpasses to use the eastbound side of the interstate while crews begin widening and reconstructing westbound lanes this fall.

 

Plan ahead for the following ongoing traffic impacts on I-84 between the Garrity Boulevard and Eagle Road Interchanges:

  • The speed limit is 55 mph.
  • Shoulders are restricted.
  • Two lanes in each direction are open during the day.

  • At least one lane is open in each direction at night (10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weekdays, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weekends).

Description

   
The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is widening and reconstructing 6.2 miles of I-84 between the Garrity and Meridian interchanges.  ­­When complete, the new six-lane divided interstate will reduce congestion and improve safety for motorists. ITD is constructing a third lane in each direction in the existing median. A permanent barrier will be placed between the east- and westbound lanes. This project requires reconstructing the existing Robinson and Black Cat bridges to accommodate additional lanes on I-84. Widening work will allow for a fourth lane. Additional environmental work, traffic analysis and overpass widening are needed before the fourth lane can be completed.
    

Background

   
The 2001 I-84 Corridor Study by the Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho (COMPASS) and ITD recommended widening I-84 between Garrity Boulevard and Meridian Road.
    

Schedule and Funding

   
Construction has begun and is expected to be complete in 2010.

Ten Mile Creek
January-March 2008: Build a new drainage structure in the median over Ten Mile Creek.

Milling Work
January-March 2008: Mill the road to remove ruts and prepare for construction-related traffic shifts.

Ten Mile Overpass to Meridian Interchange
June 2008-Summer 2009: Construct new lanes.
Spring 2009: Modify Meridian Interchange loop ramp to allow for additional lanes on I-84.

Garrity Interchange to Ten Mile Overpass
Summer - Fall 2008: Prepare median for construction of new lanes.
Fall 2008 - 2010: Construct new lanes.

Construction is funded through the GARVEE Transportation Program. The program uses Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds to expedite interstate improvement.
